The Lightning House is a semi-permanent structure located in The Farm at Awbury. Created in the Spring and Summer of 2023 out of a former stone carriage house, the space serves as a collective woodworking, performance and gathering space.

Designed and built by Futurefarmer’s lead architect Lode Vranken, the Lightning House was informed by a community design process convened in April 2022, and was constructed together with Japanese wood joinery woodworker Nobuto Suga who joined from San Francisco. Other volunteers generously contributed to the building of the structure.

The Lightning House is a sapling of S(tree)twork, a multi-year, public art project rooted in Philadelphia whose aim is to animate how we live among trees; how we perceive them; and how we imagine our future co-habitation.

Photography was produced instinctually over a beautifully hectic afternoon- documenting the opening celebrations, demonstrations, and dedication of the new public project space.

The community’s enthusiasm for Awbury Arboretum’s new magnificent structure, and the programming to follow, was overwhelming and distracting at times, as I just wanted to join in. Huge thanks to all the guests and contributors for providing this energy and welcoming my efforts.
